Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that has been around for centuries. 'Gua' means 'scrape' and 'Sha' means 'sand'.
It is a technique whereby tools, usually made from jade, bone or horn are used to scrape across the skin on the body to redirect energy flow. In doing this, stagnant energy is broken down, reducing inflammation, increasing blood flow and stimulating the lymphatic system to promote healing in the body. It’s a simple but rigorous technique which has been used for centuries to treat a range of ailments including muscle pain, tension, inflammation and migraines.
More recently Gua Sha has been adopted as a common skin care practice to address re-energizing of the facial tissues. Whilst the application tends to be less intense than traditional body work, the lighter pressure along with accessing of pressure points helps to promote skin regeneration.
Gua Sha stones are commonly available in Jade, Rose Quartz and Black Obsidian.
Jade is known as the healing stone that invites good health, promotes over all well-being, and has been known to reduce stress and anxiety. Great for all skins.
Rose Quartz is known as the stone of love. It is known to promote self-love and inner healing and feelings of peace. It is balancing on the tissues and promotes regeneration. This is a great option for ageing skin concerns.
Black Obsidian is thought to be a strongly protective stone, forming a shield against negativity and absorbs negative energies from the environment. Obsidian also draws out mental stress and tension. This stone can be a good option for congested and breakout prone skins.
Gua Sha stones are typically cool to the touch, this cooling action helps with brightening your complexion, reducing puffiness and stimulating lymphatic drainage.
The best time to use your Gua Sha in your at-home regimen is at the treat step. Prep your skin by double cleansing and exfoliating.
Continue onto to the treat step by applying your favourite Dermalogica serum and work over with your Gua Sha technique.
Our Dermalogica top picks to use alongside your Gua Sha are Retinol Clearing Oil for breakout prone skin, Phyto Nature Firming Serum for ageing concerns, Melting Moisture Masque for dryness and Smart Response Serum to address multiple skin concerns at once.
Complete your regimen by applying your moisturiser (and SPF if in the day) to hydrate, protect and glow.
The Dermalogica Gua Sha technique uses warming movements, which takes inspiration from traditional Gua Sha techniques of skin scraping and incorporates specific acupressure points to help re-energise and revitalise the skin.
Insert Gua Sha GWP Box Copy images for ‘how to’ technique.
To get the most out of your Gua Sha technique, repeat each movement at least 3 times. Gua Sha can be incorporated into your skincare regimen as little or often as you like. To look after your Gua Sha stone, gently wash with warm soapy water and carefully dry after each use.

If you know anything about skin care you’re probably familiar with Vitamin C products and their ability to deliver glowing skin. But did you know that not all Vitamin C is created equal? Meaning that from the hundreds of different Vitamin C formulas available on the market, results on your skin can vary.
We spoke to the skin experts at Dermalogica to find out what’s important to look for when buying a Vitamin C product to ensure you get the glowing skin results you’re looking for.
Is Vitamin C really worth all the Hype?
Yes! Says Victoria Evans, Education Manager at Dermalogica. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant with multiple skin benefits. It firms, brightens and increases your skin’s natural defences from environmental elements that can cause premature skin ageing. The challenge though, it that Vitamin C is notoriously tricky to formulate with. It’s highly unstable, meaning it gets used up or ‘oxidised’ within the bottle. It’s highly susceptible to degradation by light, heat and air. You may have noticed your Vitamin C serum turn brown or start to smell funky, this is a result of the Vitamin C oxidising. The problem here is that you’re not getting the potential benefits in the skin where you need it, so you might be dissatisfied with the results on your skin.
What skin type benefits from Vitamin C products?
All skin conditions can benefit from the power of Vitamin C. If your skin is dull or you have uneven skin tone, potent Vitamin C formulas can boost skin luminosity and quickly get your skin looking glowing and radiant. Ensure you include double cleansing, regular exfoliation and SPF defence alongside your Vitamin C product for best results.
What should you look for? Does a higher percentage of Vitamin C mean a better result?
To focus on the percentage of Vitamin C as a measure of efficacy is misleading. For example, a serum with 15 or 20% pure Vitamin C is still highly susceptible to degradation in the formula. Plus, it’s also worth noting that pure Vitamin C is Ascorbic Acid, so the potential for skin irritation is higher with high percentages of this form.
Is there anything unique about Dermalogica’s Vitamin C formulas?
Yes! At Dermalogica, we looked at the need to stabilise Vitamin C in our formulas to ensure efficacy and achieve noticeable skin results. We use 2 forms of highly stable Vitamin C within our BioLumin-C products. We carried out clinical studies comparing our Vitamin C products to a leading competitor which showed our product delivers 3 x more brightening and 3 x more Vitamin C into the skin. What’s more, we include other ingredients such as Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid and other skin conditioners in our Vitamin C formulas to boost results. You may have experienced gritty or sticky Vitamin C Serums before, Dermalogica’s BioLumin-C formulas are light and hydrating, soaking comfortably into the skin with no sticky residue.

To achieve a healthy glow during the summer months, there are a few things you can focus on in your regimen, namely protection from the sun and increasing hydration and repair.
Healthy skin starts with clean skin. Keep up with your daily double cleansing through the summer. Ideally start with an oil-based cleanser to remove the build up of sweat and other oil soluble debris such as sunscreens and pollutants. This will keep skin clean and clear, allowing you to reduce your makeup and let your natural glow shine through.
Your go to summer skin care product is of course an SPF. At Dermalogica we recommend our clients to wear a broad spectrum SPF30-50, one that defends the skin from both UVB (burning) and UVA (ageing) rays. The trick is to apply enough for full protection so be generous on application. My top pick for an everyday SPF is Prisma Protect SPF30. Suitable for all skin conditions, it’s the ultimate multitasking moisturiser. It contains light-activated, intelligent drone technology to boost skin luminosity plus breakthrough antioxidant technology to protect against pollution.
At Dermalogica we’re dedicated to helping people achieve and maintain healthy skin and when it comes to skin damage, exposure to UV is at the top of the list. UVA and UVB rays are present during daylight hours and both penetrate the skin triggering damage. Whilst UVB - burning rays are at their strongest in the summer months, UVA - ageing rays are present at the same strength from dusk till dawn year-round and can penetrate windows and glass. They cause deep damage to skin cells and structural proteins like collagen.
The bottom line is that exposure to these rays’ cause damage to the skin. Whilst your skin has the ability to repair some of this damage, the damage accumulates over the years resulting in premature ageing. Lines, wrinkles and dark spots become evident and worst-case scenario, this damage may lead to skin cancer development.
We’re proud at Dermalogica to partner with skin cancer charity SKCIN https://www.skcin.org/ to help raise awareness of skin cancer through education, promoting prevention and early detection.
Another way to defend your skin during the summer is to include an advanced pigment fighting serum. UV radiation is the top trigger for hyper-pigmentation and uneven skin tone. PowerBright Dark Spot Serum is formulated with high-tech ingredients such as Niacinamide and Hexylresorcinol that work together to reduce excess pigment in the skin; Shiitake Mushroom, Blackcurrant Oil and Peony Flower help brighten the skin and skin shielding actives protect against pollution-induced dark spots. This creamy serum feels incredibly hydrating on the skin and begins to balance the appearance of uneven pigmentation within days. Use one pump on clean skin underneath your SPF moisturiser.
My final tip would be to help your skin recover from any damage caused during the day. Your skin is very active at night and is busy repairing and renewing. Give it a helping hand with Sound Sleep Cocoon. This revitalising treatment gel-cream transforms skin overnight by optimising night-time skin recovery. Encapsulated, motion-activated French Lavender essential oil, along with calming Sandalwood and Patchouli, soothe the senses with aromatherapy to help promote deep, restful sleep for healthier-looking skin. Persian Silk Tree Extract reduces signs of skin fatigue and restores vitality while Wu-Zhu-Yu Extract provides visibly radiant skin by morning.
]]>It was a long a winding road that finally brought me to my Prince Charming. He didn’t just ride in on one white horse, more like a team of them! And so myself and my daughter upped sticks from our city life in Dublin, and headed to the beautiful North West of Ireland to begin our rural adventure – marketing and PR by day for a luxury skincare brand, equestrian farmer surrounded by dogs the rest of the time. Life is infinitely better here for a myriad of reasons but that is a story for another day.
Last year we set about planning our big day and envisioned it to be in the sunshine and so we booked a beautiful location in Portugal for this June. But then along came COVID 19 to spoil the party. Thankfully in my career, I’ve had plenty of experience in dealing with last-minute event crisis and so within 48hrs, I had cancelled wedding Take 1 and had booked a new and improved wedding Take 2 along with all suppliers, in the stunning Adare Manor. We are now 12 weeks out from our big day (as long as Leo and Tony allow it to proceed). I must say that it is quite bizarre being this close to the wedding and not actually knowing if it will go ahead or not. It is a bit like spinning a roulette wheel as if planning a wedding (2 weddings!) wasn’t stressful enough.
This stress, along with having to adapt to working from home, not being able to see my family in Dublin, having a bored teenager stuck indoors (although thrilled that she got to miss her Junior Cert) and the general worry of not contracting Coronavirus, has all taken it’s toll on my skin.
And I am not alone in this. I have had numerous friends and family contact me with skin concerns over the past few months. We must remember that our skin is our body’s largest organ and will tell us when something is wrong. Breakouts, rashes, dry patches, etc. are all your body’s way of sending you an SOS. Ignore these warnings at your peril!
Over the course of my career, I have been lucky enough to work with numerous beauty brands and have amassed a body of knowledge during that time. Working with VOYA really opened my eyes to the fact that organic and natural does not mean ineffective. It is actually quite a common misconception. In fact, my skin has never looked better since I made the switch to VOYA products (always allow 6-8 weeks if changing a skin care routine as your skin will need time to adapt).
Am I holier than thou and virtuous through and through when it comes to my skincare? Absolutely not! I am not averse to a little injectable assistance here and there now that I’m on the wrong side of 40. BUT what I do know, is that if I am going to subject my skin to harsher chemicals and treatments occasionally, then I really need to be kind to it and care for it with the best of ingredients the rest of the time.
For those of you looking to get Bride to Be Glowing (bride or not!), here are my Top 10 VOYA skincare heroes:
1. My Little Hero – aptly named, this is an iconic product that has won many awards and is loved by both women and men. It’s a real multitasker, and let’s face it, we all want hard-working products that offer value. I use MLH religiously every night to give my skin a deeply moisturising drink. Night-time is key for skin recovery – ALWAYS cleanse and moisturise. Male skin also loves this product and it can double as a moisturiser and beard conditioner.
2. Get Glowing – another award-winning product. This clay mask is my ‘spa at home’ go-to. I use it every couple of weeks. As with all masks, do not use it immediately before a big event as they tend to draw out impurities and so may result in a breakout. Get Glowing is also perfect to dab on to the occasional spot as it will dry it out and draw out the nasty stuff.
3. Luminosity – this is a wonder product to give you a real glow. I use it immediately after Get Glowing for best results.
4. Bright Eyes – it does what it says on the bottle! Perfect for keeping the sensitive skin around your eyes moisturised.
5. Me Time – the perfect hydrating moisturiser that is light and won’t negatively impact makeup application. Apply daily under your SPF.
6. Effervescence – This body scrub is incredible. So often we focus on our face and forget the other 90% of the skin on our body. It is the ultimate self-tan remover and perfect to get baby soft skin all over. Also ideal for a hand or foot scrub if you are treating yourself to a mini Mani/Pedi at home.
7. Softly Does It – while I love our body oils and in particular Moonlight Moments for it’s relaxing scent and properties, this body lotion is a no-nonsense nourishing cream. Use sparingly and rub in well, or leave to soak into the skin as you prefer.
8. Totally Balmy – another swiss army knife product! This is the most luxurious cleanser that I have ever used that will remove even the most dramatic makeup. It comes as a solid in the tub, then you warm between your fingertips and it turns in to a smooth oil (similar to coconut oil). Remove with warm water and the organic cotton cloth which comes with the product. The cloths can be washed multiple times, so you are also doing some good for the environment (bin your cotton wool pads and wipes!). Again, this is one for the guys as it’s perfect as a beard conditioner or even a cuticle moisturiser.
9. Ritzy Spritzy – This toning spray wakes me up in the morning with one spritz and wipes away the last remnants of the day before I go to bed. It is also perfect as a refreshing spray when in dehydrating hot climates or when flying (oh how I miss travel!). It is also wonderful for anyone going through the menopause and the dreaded hot flushes. And finally, it can double as a texturizing hair spray to create beachy waves (due to the sea salt in it).
10. Balmelicious – this is a handy lip balm to keep in my bag while on the go. I love the lemon and lime scent in summer and the vanilla and peppermint in winter. It can also act as cuticle moisturiser with all the additional hand washing we have lately.
All systems normal.

]]>It is important to note that your skin type can change over time. There are many internal and external factors that can alter and influence your skin type, such as climate, pollution, medicine, stress, products, and most notably, hormones, diet, and age. Oily skin is more common in teenagers but can become drier with age. Similarly, those with normal skin type can find that their skin becomes drier at certain points throughout their life.
The 4 Key Skin Types
Normal
Normal skin is well-balanced. Sebum and moisture are balanced so your skin is not too dry or too oily. Because of this, your skin is not sensitive, has barely visible pores, a glowing and smooth complexion, and generally no imperfections.
Maintain balance in your skin and enhance your its texture and tone with these products:
The Special Cleansing Gel removes impurities, smoothes, and purifies the skin whilst maintaining natural moisture balance.
Multi-Active Toner refreshes and hydrates the skin for optimal moisture absorption.
Dermalogica’s Skin Smoothing Cream contains botanicals and vitamins to maintain moisture balance, improve texture, and restore tone.
Dry
Dry skin has less sebum than normal skin, so it cannot retain moisture as the natural barrier is compromised. Dry skin can be recognised by a dull and rough complexion, red patches, tightness, and visible lines. Dry skin can become exacerbated by weather, hot showers and cosmetics, and is often more prone to sensitivity and irritations, in which it can become red, itchy, and scaly.
To help combat dry and sensitive skin, try the following products:
Intensive Moisture Balance helps combat dry skin, prevents damage from free radicals, and strengthens the lipid barrier to prevent moisture loss.
The Dry Skin Kit works to keep your skin well-balanced and hydrated. This kit is ideal for a first-time user to trial these products to discover how they can work for you.
Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Cleanser soothes the skin, minimises agitation, protects the natural lipid barrier, and protects against irritants.
Combination
Combination skin is both dry and oily, due to there being too much sebum and too little sebum in various places on your skin. Combination skin is typically dry on the cheeks and oily across the t-zone - on the nose, forehead and chin. Some characteristics of combination skin include blackheads, shiny skin, large pores, but dry cheeks.
The best products for combination skin:
The Normal/Dry Skin Kit is ideal for those with a combination of both normal and dry skin. With a cleanser, toner, exfoliant and moisturiser, the skin kit will help to balance your skin.
The Normal/Oily Skin Kit is for those with normal and oily combination skin. It aims to clear, hydrate, control oil production, and restore skin.
Oily
Oily skin is characterised by large and visible clogged pores, shiny or dull skin tone, blackheads, and spots. Oily skin is caused by the overproduction of sebum due to hormones, stress, cosmetics and medication. This type of skin is prone to both noninflammatory and inflammatory acne.
Some of the best ways to reduce oily skin is through the following products:
Dermalogica Medibac Oil Control Lotion absorbs excess oil, eliminates oil, reduce congestion, and reduces sebum production.
Dermal Clay Cleanser removes excess oil, cleanses congested skin, removes debris, and prevents future breakouts.
Medibac Clearing Kit works to treat, clear and prevent breakouts by balancing oil production to maintain healthy and clear skin.
By identifying your skin type, you can get amazing skin by using the right products for you. Whether your skin is normal, oily, combination or dry, you can have flawless and glowing skin.

Myth #1 Stronger Products Work Better
Whilst it may seem that stronger products will work better, they may do more harm than good. Harsh and chemical products will strip the skin of its natural oils that are essential in skin health. Stronger products will dry out and irritate the skin, causing the sebaceous glands to overcompensate and overproduce oil, making your skin more oily and more prone to acne. Make sure you use products that are suitable for your skin type and are not harmful. Avoid acnegenic ingredients, including lanolin, artificial fragrances, and mineral oil, as they will only worsen your condition.
Myth #2 You Must Exfoliate Acne Away
Exfoliation can help acne by preventing a buildup of stubborn dead skin cells that block pores and contribute to acne. However, you can’t exfoliate away blackheads, and over-exfoliating or exfoliating too often can leave the skin dry, sensitive and damaged. Scrubbing will remove new skin cells and strip the skin of its natural oils which leads to spots. Pair one day of intense exfoliation with seven days of gentle exfoliation to more effectively stimulate cell renewal rates, helping to improve skin texture and brighten skin.
Myth #3 You Can Wash Away Blackheads and Acne
You can’t wash away blackheads and acne. Whilst keeping the face clean and free of debris will help to reduce buildup that clogs pores, acne isn’t related to dirt or hygiene. If you try to wash away acne by scrubbing and using harsh chemicals, this will worsen the skin by drying it out and causing an overproduction of sebum, leading to acne. Wash no more than twice a day using a gentle cleanser.
Myth #4 Makeup Doesn’t Contribute To Acne
This one is dependent on how you use makeup. Leaving makeup on overnight clogs pores and contributes to acne. Similarly, using comedogenic makeup products will block pores and cause acne. To reduce the impact of makeup on acne, remove all makeup thoroughly after wearing it with a gentle cleanser and makeup remover. When using makeup, choose non-comedogenic products or powders, as these will not block the pores.
Myth #5 You Need To Pop Pimples To Remove Them
Although it can sometimes be very tempting to pop pimples, this will only worsen them. Popping and squeezing spots and messing with your face causes pus to penetrate deeper into the skin, cause more inflammation and scarring, spreads bacteria across the skin which can cause another spot, and spread under your skin only to reappear as another spot. If left alone, a whitehead will disappear within three days, so resist popping to see the benefits.
Myth #6 Acne Disappears With Age
If only this were true, and many do believe that acne is only a problem that affects hormonal teenagers and we won’t have to face it later in life. Adult acne is, in fact, becoming more common and the most likely and common causes are hormones and stress. Stress stimulates sebum production which blocks the pores and leads to spots. Hormones, too, cause the overproduction of sebum due to differing hormone levels during pregnancy and menstruation. Adult acne is often more inflammatory than teenage acne so should be treated using a different product. Try the Dermalogica Medibac range, which is targeted at alleviating adult acne.
Myth #7 Sun Exposure Can Improve Acne
Although sun exposure will reduce inflammation and can be anti-bacterial, too much exposure will cause lasting damage to your skin. For treating acne in the long term, the sun’s UV rays will break down your skin’s collagen and open up your pores to blackheads. This will also make your skin harder to repair itself, increasing the chance of acne scars. What’s more, harmful UVA and UVB rays penetrate the skin, contributing to ageing skin and increase the risk of skin cancer. Stay protected from the sun by using a broad spectrum sunscreen that doesn’t clog pores, and reapply throughout the day and after coming into contact with water.
Hopefully, some of these busted myths will help you figure out the right treatment for your acne. Remember that sun exposure won’t help acne, it might not disappear with age, don’t pop your pimples, use makeup properly, don’t overwash your face, don’t over exfoliate, and stronger products do not mean better. Remember to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for more tips on dealing with acne and other skin conditions.]]>
This article highlights the most common causes of hyperpigmentation and what you can do to treat the condition and have glowing skin.
Causes
Sun Exposure
Over-exposing the skin to the sun’s harmful UV rays causes hyperpigmentation, as melanin is produced to protect the skin against excessive sun damage. Melanin causes darkened patches and age spots where the skin is most exposed, most predominantly on the hands and face. To reduce hyperpigmentation and defend against sun damage, make sure you keep protected from the sun by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Hormones
Hormones cause a type of hyperpigmentation called melasma. This is more common in women, as an increase in the stimulation of oestrogen and progesterone trigger the overproduction of melanin. This often occurs during pregnancy, and is also known as the ‘mask of pregnancy’. It also occurs due to taking contraception, or as a side effect of some medications and cosmetics. Melasma most frequently appears on the chin, upper lip, cheeks, nose, forehead, and jawline, and often disappears after pregnancy, or when finishing a course of contraception.
Injury
Hyperpigmentation can also occur after a skin injury or trauma to the skin. Traumas such as acne, chemical peels, cuts, burns, psoriasis and eczema cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and leave a dark patch after scarring.
Treatment
Dermalogica PowerBright TRx C-12 Pure Bright Serum
Dermalogica’s PowerBright range is designed to treat hyperpigmentation. The Pure Bright Serum should be applied twice daily directly to the affected area after cleansing. For the best results, follow this with Pure Night in the evening and Pure Light SPF 50 in the day to protect against harmful hyperpigmentation-causing UV rays. This serum increases luminosity and absorbs quickly to start acting against hyperpigmentation as soon as possible.
Dermalogica PowerBright TRx Pure Light SPF50
With no artificial fragrances or colours, PowerBright Pure Light SPF 50 shields from UV-induced hyperpigmentation. Sunscreen defends against the sun’s rays, peptides regulate the production of melanin, algae and botanicals even skin tone, and hyaluronic acid replenishes the natural moisture barrier to reduce lines. Apply Pure Light to the face and neck 30 minutes before sun exposure, and it can even be used as a daily moisturiser to protect against the sun and reduce hyperpigmentation.
Dermalogica PowerBright TRx Pure Night
Pure Night acts as a night time moisturiser to fight against hyperpigmentation whilst you sleep. Apply in the evening to the face and neck after Pure Bright Serum to gain optimum skin brightening benefits and reduce signs of ageing, uneven skin tone, brown spots, dark patches, and restore brightness and evenness of skin tone.
Dermalogica PowerBright TRx Treatment Kit
This convenient travel kit is ideal for combatting hyperpigmentation on the go. The kit contains Pure Bright Serum, Pure Light SPF and Pure Night and prohibits the factors that contribute to hyperpigmentation. Apply the serum directly after cleansing and wait one minute to allow for sufficient absorption. Follow this with Pure Light in the day and Pure Night at night. This treatment kit will reduce dark areas and promote bright, glowing, and even skin.
Whether caused by sun exposure, hormones or injury, Dermalogica Power Bright will help control and prevent the factors that contribute to hyperpigmentation. Try a treatment to reduce brown spots, banish dark patches and eliminate uneven skin tone, and encourage glowing and luminous skin.
]]>Toners have had a bit of a bad time over the years. Many are unsure why we use them, and what they do for us. However, toners should be an essential part of your regimen. They are perfect for all skin conditions, from dry and sensitive to oily and ageing, and are a range of benefits that toners offer our skin.
Shrinks & Evens Out Pores
Toner can tighten up your pores and even out porosity. This reduces the risk of irritants attacking the skin, and dirt or debris building up in the pores that leads to breakouts.
Balances pH
Cleansing alters your skin’s pH balance due to alkaline ingredients in your cleanser. Skin has a pH of around 5-6, so is naturally acidic. Your skin then has to work to increase the acidity of your skin, which can lead to an overproduction of oil. Toner restores and rebalances your skin’s pH to keep it healthy.
Protective Layer
Toners add an extra protective layer on your skin to protect against harmful irritants in the environment such as toxins, pollution, UV radiation and dirt.
Moisturises & Hydrates
Using a toner will improve moisturiser absorption by penetrating the skin deeper. Some toners are also humectants, which lock moisture into the skin and improve hydration by developing the hydrolipidic film and drawing water from the dermis to the epidermis.
Completes Cleansing Process
Using a toner can act as an extra cleanser, removing remaining stubborn makeup, sunscreen, oil and impurities that may lead to breakouts. Cleansers provide a deeper clean and complete the cleansing process.
Refreshes Skin
Toner leaves your face feeling clean and refreshed. Toners can also stimulate cell production, making your skin feel fresher, renewed and brighter. Applying toner has the same refreshing effect as splashing your face with water.
Now that you know all of the many benefits of using a toner you must be eager to have a go yourself. Toners can be used after cleansing or throughout the day to give your skin a boost. It’s also important that you choose the right toner for your skin type. Try one of these to get started.
Multi-Active Toner
This toner is a light facial spritz that evens out pores, refreshes and hydrates the skin, and prepares the skin for moisturiser absorption.
Antioxidant Hydramist
Antioxidant hydramist provides a protective layer to improve ageing skin texture, defend against free radicals, and hydrate and refresh the skin.
Ultracalming Mist
This toner is designed to protect your face against environmental factors such as pollution and toxins. It is perfect for sensitive skin and also helps to properly remove makeup.
Breakout Clearing Toner
Breakout Clearing Toner controls excess oils and helps prevent breakouts whilst refreshing and cooling the skin.
I hope you now see the benefits of using a toner and can incorporate one into your daily skincare routine. They are great for evening out the pores, protecting your skin from harm, balancing pH, cleansing deeper, and refreshing the skin. Whatever your skin type, toners can work for you.

]]>Sensitive skin is primarily the result of genetics, and as a result, the skin is more delicate and prone to sensitivity. Sensitive skin can appear anywhere on the body, but is more commonly found on the face.
Sensitive skin occurs because of a defect in the skin’s protective outer layer - the epidermal lipid barrier layer. The barrier becomes weakened which results in water loss and the penetration of irritants and allergens. This damaged barrier layer, along with increased inflammation, compromises the skin’s condition.
In this article we discover the causes of sensitive skin, and some methods you can use to control it.
Causes
Weather
Cold weather in the winter causes the skin to become dehydrated and more sensitive. Likewise, the sun’s UV rays in the summer damage your skin barrier, resulting in increased sensitivity, so remember to wear sunscreen.
Skin Care Products
Some skin care products can make your skin worse. Perfumes, alcohol, dyes, artificial colours and fragrances, and harsh chemicals will do more damage to your skin’s protective barrier, increase irritation, and can even trigger an allergic reaction. What’s more, using the wrong skin care products and overusing products can worsen irritation, so make sure you use products that best suit your skin type and apply as advised, as this will strengthen your skin’s barrier instead.
Diet & Lifestyle
Your diet and lifestyle can have a big impact on your skin. Lack of sleep, stress, eating too much junk food and not drinking enough water can exacerbate your skin’s condition, and cause sensitivity as your skin’s protective barrier is weakened. Be sure to eat a balanced and nutritious diet, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep and keep stress levels low to keep your skin in the best condition it can be.
Hormones
Hormonal changes due to puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause affect your skin’s protective barrier and its ability to defend against irritants.
Pollution
UV radiation, ozone and environmental pollutants such as exhaust fumes and smoke can weaken the skin’s natural defenses as free radicals are absorbed by the skin. The barrier can no longer work effectively, leaving your skin even more sensitive and vulnerable to irritants.
Prevention
There are several methods and products to use to help soothe, calm and reduce redness and irritation. Try some of the following to protect your sensitive skin.
Ultracalming Cleanser
This cleanser will combat sensitivity caused by pollution, climate, stress, hormones and cosmetics. It is gentle to minimise agitation, and protects the skin’s natural lipid barrier.
Gentle Soothing Booster
This oil free booster will calm, soothe and hydrate the skin when it is feeling extra sensitive and needs a little boost.
Barrier Repair
A waterless moisturiser that helps sooth and repair sensitive skin. It creates a shield against environmental irritants and free radicals, and reduces water loss.
Super Sensitive Shield
This chemical free sunscreen will protect the skin’s barrier from UV rays and defend it from irritants caused by the sun.
Redness Relief Primer
Reduce redness and soothe skin with this primer. It will strengthen your skin’s barrier whilst protecting from the sun’s harmful rays.
Ultracalming Mist
This mist will soothe and hydrate whilst calming redness and inflammation.
Now that you have a deeper understanding of the causes of sensitive skin, you can use some of the recommended methods to help reduce inflammation, redness and irritation, to strengthen your skin’s barrier, and soothe, calm and cool your skin.

It is thus important to remove all of your makeup before going to bed. However, are you really taking your makeup off properly? Some of the wrong ways to remove makeup include:
So how do we remove our makeup properly?
1. Firstly, use a wipe to dissolve the makeup on your face, but don’t scrub. Dermalogica Precleanse Wipes dissolve makeup, mascara, lipstick, sunscreen and dirt, whilst aloe and apricot kernel oil help soothe, calm and nourish the skin.
I hope you see a difference in your skin’s tone and texture. By following these steps and properly removing all makeup, your skin should feel clean and fresh, removed of impurities and dirt.

]]>Spending time in the sun is important for your skin to help produce vitamin D, which helps in bone growth and formation. However, overexposing yourself to too much sun can be incredibly harmful, most notably ageing the skin and contributing to skin cancer.
This is caused by the sun’s UV rays. UVA rays penetrate the dermis, the skin’s deepest and thickest layer, and contribute to premature ageing and wrinkling. UVB rays penetrate the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer, and contribute to skin cancer.
In order to prevent these harmful rays from damaging your skin, it is important to use appropriate protection. It can, however, be difficult to know which products will truly shield your skin, and which will not provide sufficient protection. We are here to help you identify what to look out for when choosing skincare and sunscreen products so that you can be properly defended.
SPF stands for sunscreen protection factor. It is measured by calculating the amount of time it takes to burn sun-protected skin compared to unprotected skin. You must use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more, as this means that you can stay in the sun 15 times longer with the cream on than without.
Physical or mineral ingredients protect you by reflecting and deflecting the rays off your skin. Look out for titanium oxide and zinc oxide when identifying physical formulations in your products.
Chemical or organic elements offer protection by absorbing harmful UV rays. By applying sunscreen, you create a defensive layer which absorbs the rays before they reach your skin. Look out for avobenzone, octinoxate, oxybenzone, octisalate and homosalate when identifying chemical ingredients in your products.
Always make sure you buy a broad or multi-spectrum sunscreen, as this will provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays, and defend your skin from premature ageing and the risks associated with cancer.
Water will wash off sunscreen and leave your skin vulnerable to the sun’s rays. If you are planning to go for a swim, make sure your sunscreen reads ‘water resistant’ on the label. Water resistant means that the product will be effective in water for up to 40 minutes, which means you’ll need to re-apply after every 40 minutes of coming into contact with water.

]]>It occurs when the skin’s natural oils are stripped away, leaving the skin unprotected and deprived of moisture. The medical term for dry skin is xeroderma, and can manifest as a mild, short-term condition, or a more severe, long-term problem.
There is a range of factors that can result in dry skin. Some are external, such as air temperature, clothing and soaps, and some are internal, like medical conditions and ageing.
1. Moisturiser
Misusing your moisturiser and moisturising too often makes your skin dependent on it, as it believes it has enough water, lipid and protein. This stops your skin producing these vital nutrients and causes the skin to become dry.
2. Winter Weather
Dry skin is exacerbated by cold winter weather. Because the humidity levels drop and the air is cold and dry, water in your skin evaporates more quickly, making it dry, flaky and tight.
3. Indoor Heating and Air Conditioning
Turning on the indoor heating to get warm during the harsh winter months or the air conditioning to get cool in the summer can also worsen dry skin. Indoor heating and air conditioning produce dry air and low humidity levels which pull the moisture from your skin.
4. Summer Weather
Warm weather dries out the skin by being low in humidity. Low humidity levels strip the skin of its natural moisture. Sun exposure also dries out the skin, as UV rays penetrate the skin’s layers and reduce its oil levels.
5. Hot Showers
Long, hot showers wash away natural oils which protect your skin and retain its moisture, leaving your skin tight and dry.
6. Soap and Over-Washing
Just like having overly hot showers, over-washing and using harsh detergent soaps also strip the skin of the essential oils needed to protect it. This leaves it more dry, irritated and vulnerable to cracking.
7. Clothing
Clothing made from fibres such as wool can leave your skin irritated and dry. Exposing your skin to uncomfortable clothing will only worsen the itch, cause rashes and make your skin drier.
8. Medication
A number of medicines have been proven to dry out skin, such as medications for high blood pressure, cholesterol and acne. These medications reduce the water levels in your stratum corneum, leaving it dry.
9. Medical Conditions
Many medical conditions result in dry skin. Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis leave the skin flaky and itchy. Dry skin can also be caused by diabetes which dehydrates the skin, hypothyroid which reduces oil production, and malnutrition which deprives the skin of vital moisture-providing nutrients.
10. Ageing
Dry skin is more common the older we get. As we age, the epidermis thins and the stratum corneum can’t retain as much water. Changes in hormone levels can also cause dry skin as we age.
At Lafantine.com, we have a range of products to help combat dry skin.
Get started with our dry skin kit.

]]>It is important that you exfoliate in order to look after your skin. Regular exfoliation helps many skin types, including ageing, dry and breakout skin. Without regular exfoliation, the skin can appear dry and dull. What’s more, build up of dead skin cells can clog pores, leading to spots.
Exfoliation stimulates cell renewal rates by removing dead skin cells and debris on the skin’s surface, which makes way for new skin cells. Exfoliation will improve your skin’s texture, even your complexion, unclog pores, smooth wrinkles, give your skin more of a healthy glow and allow for sufficient moisturiser absorption.
It is recommended to pair one day of intense exfoliation with seven days of gentle exfoliation. Alternatively, for normal and combination skin, exfoliate 2-3 times a week, and once a week for sensitive skin. Work out which is best for your skin, and be careful not to over-exfoliate. Exfoliating too often leaves the skin dry, sensitive and damaged, as you remove new skin cells and strip the skin of its natural oils, which can also lead to spots.
Try these exfoliants to achieve expert exfoliation:
This exfoliant is gentle enough for daily use and exfoliates debris to leave the skin brighter and smoother, whilst stimulating cell renewal and more even complexion. Apply half a teaspoon into damp hands, rub hands together to create a paste, and massage gently onto the face for one minute before rinsing thoroughly. Follow with a toner and moisturiser.
Containing charcoal, sulphur, volcanic ash, sea salt, bamboo extract and hydroxy acids, this masque brightens and invigorates dull and tired skin. Apply to face and throat after cleansing. After 7-10 minutes, massage with wet hands and rinse thoroughly before following with a moisturiser.
This exfoliant thoroughly removes debris through chemical exfoliation. It prepares the skin for moisturiser absorption and speeds cell renewal rates. For best results use twice a week by applying onto cleansed skin and leaving for 10 minutes before rinsing.
For full body exfoliation, this exfoliant smoothes and energises the skin to revitalise the body.
Massage a generous amount into the body and lather before rinsing and drying. Follow with a hydrating cream for best results, as the scrub will prepare the skin for hydration absorption.
Have a go at some of these exfoliants and experiment with which exfoliating methods work for you. Exfoliation will transform your skin from dull, dry and blemished to smooth, young and fresh.

It can make the skin look shiny and greasy, and when the oil comes into contact with dead skin cells, plugs pores and contributes to the production of spots.
Oil is produced in sebaceous glands. Those with oily skin have overactive glands that produce excess oil, also known as sebum. The glands are mostly found in the face, neck, head, back and chest, so these areas are often most affected.
This post discusses the causes of oily skin, and most importantly, how to prevent it.
Genetics
Skin type, like many other traits, is caused by genetics. Much like if you have dry or sensitive skin, oily skin is hereditary.
This means that if your parents have oily skin, then I’m afraid you probably will too.
Hormones
During puberty, increased androgen levels tell your oil glands to produce oil, but for some, the glands produce too much oil.
Hormonal changes during menstruation, pregnancy and menopause can also cause oily skin as hormone production causes oil glands to release extra oil.
Stress
Emotional and physical stress can also contribute towards oily skin. When you become stressed, the level of cortisol, your body’s stress hormone, rises, resulting in an increase in oil production.
Even those who do not normally have oily skin can temporarily develop stress-related acne due to increased oil production.
Weather
In spring and summer, a rise in temperature and humidity can cause an increase in sebum.
In autumn and winter, the air becomes dry, causing the skin to dehydrate, and the glands to overproduce oil to compensate.
Over-Washing
Washing your skin more than twice a day leaves it dry and irritated. This causes your skin to overcompensate and produce more oil than it needs to.
The same can be said for using the strongest products or scrubbing your skin too forcefully. Although it may seem that you need to wash or scrub more to get rid of oils, it will just make your skin worse.
Pore-Clogging Cosmetics
Wearing oily or heavy makeup can trap oil, block your pores, worsen spot breakouts and make your skin even more oily.
This is because many products contain comedogenic pore-clogging ingredients such as cocoa butter, isopropyl myristate and soybean oil.
Don’t Over-Exfoliate or Over-Cleanse
Scrubbing too hard and over-cleansing will worsen your skin and cause it to produce more oil.
Instead, cleanse gently and don’t cleanse more than twice a day or exfoliate more than 2-3 times a week. Try the Dermalogica Oily Skin Kit to cleanse and decongest pores, refresh and hydrate your skin.
Use the Correct Cleanser
Don’t use harsh or strong cleansers as these will irritate the skin, causing it to produce more oil. It is important to use cleansers and products that suit your skin type, as these are designed to work for you.
Try a foaming cleanser with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, or our Dermal Clay Cleanser, which contains bentonite and kaolin to remove excess oils, refine skin texture and remove dead cell debris.
Use Oil-Free Products
Using oily products will make your skin shinier, so avoid oil-based, pore-clogging ingredients in your cosmetics and moisturisers (although it may seem that your skin has enough moisture, it still needs moisturising).
Instead, use non-comedogenic products that are powder-based, oil-free and light, such as the Dermalogica Oil Control Lotion or Oil Clearing Moisturiser. These products will not block pores or cause spots.
Use Blotting Papers
If your oily skin is bothering you throughout the day, then you can try blotting papers.
Simply dab the sheet onto your face to absorb any excess oils and reduce shine.
Try a Masque
Using a masque once a week can absorb oil, smooth the skin and calm your face.
Try our Skin Refining Masque which contains clay, making it ideal for soaking up oil, cleansing your pores and removing impurities.
See a Dermatologist
If your oily skin is leading to acne or you are struggling to control it, you could see a dermatologist.
They may recommend laser treatments, chemical peels, oral medications, stronger creams or hormonal treatments to regulate the production of oil and reduce oily skin and acne.
Hopefully, through following these simple tips your oily skin can become a thing of the past. Now that you know what causes your oily skin, you can try these preventative methods to reduce the shine, clear acne and feel confident in your skin.

Jane started out as a UK trained skin therapist. After moving to the USA from the UK in 1983, Jane found that America lacked the level of training she received in the UK. Jane used her training and knowledge to open a small training programme in California for therapists, which became The International Dermal Institute (IDI). Today, the IDI has grown substantially, with 37 locations worldwide.
It was during this time that Jane realised she hadn’t come across a product line she believed focused on skin health. She had a vision of a brand without harsh irritants and spot causing ingredients and with clean, non fussy branding; and so Dermalogica was born.
Dermalogica is now accessible in 80 countries around the world. Loved by people the world over. Professional Skin Therapists and clients alike, as well as having some pretty famous celebrity fans!

There is nothing more relaxing than a hot shower or a long soak in the bath. But for itchy, dry or eczema-prone skin, lingering too long under hot water can exacerbate the condition. Drawing moisture from the skin and impairing the skin’s natural moisture barrier, allowing for potential allergens to enter the skin.
Instead, take short, lukewarm showers. Patting the skin dry rather than rubbing. Following up with Dermalogica’s Ultra Rich Body Cream while skin is still slightly damp will allow the product to penetrate the deeper layers of skin.
While regular exfoliation is beneficial for removing dead skin cells, debris and excess oil, going too hard at it can worsen some existing skin problems. Sensitive and eczema prone skin won’t thank you for overzealous scrubbing. For sensitive skins, we recommend a non-abrasive hydroxy acid exfoliation such as Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant.
We would suggest avoiding exfoliation all together on eczema prone skin. Instead, treat eczema inflammation with a calming cleanser such as UltraCalming Cleanser and Soothing UltraCalming Serum Concentrate to repair damaged skin.
We’ve all done it; got home after a long day and fallen into bed without removing our makeup. But sleeping in a day's worth of makeup and grime is asking for trouble! Cell turnover is at optimal levels while you sleep. Removing makeup before bed is crucial for letting your skin breathe and repair itself.
To give skin its best chance and ensure it’s squeaky clean before bed, we recommend using Precleanse before your prescribed Cleanser and Toner.
Admit it. How often do you really clean your makeup brushes? Brushes and Sponges are a breeding ground for Bacteria, which then transfers to your face and your makeup with each use.
Washing brushes with a specialist cleaner or a mild formulation such as baby shampoo at least once a week will help to limit the spread of spot-causing oil and bacteria.
Give these few small changes a go and let us know if you notice an improvement in your skin. We’d love to hear from you!
Give Dermalogica a go with these 7 simple and straightforward steps, and say goodbye to dissatisfaction, and hello to skin satisfaction.
PreCleanse
Begin with a pre cleanse to clear the skin of any stubborn debris or muck. Using a pre cleanser will really cut into any excess dirt and penetrate both sunscreen and makeup to prepare your skin for the cleanser.
Use the PreCleanse sample included in the kit. Created by the International Dermal Institute, both the PreCleanse and Cleansing Gel work together as part of the Double Cleanse routine, to give you extra protected, healthy and clean skin. Simply wet your hands and massage into your face to create a light milky emulsion, then rinse.
Cleanse
Next comes the most critical step in your regime; the cleanse. To do this use a cleanser which will clear the skin of dead skin cells, grime and impurities, and remove pollutants from your pores. Cleansers do this by breaking down the dirt so that it is more easily washed away.
Use our Special Cleansing Gel, which is soap free and acid balanced so that excess oils and toxins are removed without drying the skin or destroying its natural balance. Gently lather a pea-sized amount of gel in your hands, apply to your face, and rinse with water.
Exfoliate
Exfoliation removes any dry skin cells or excess debris from the surface of your skin. Around 40,000 dead skin cells are shed every day, so it’s important to remove any still clinging on. Doing so will speed up and stimulate the cell renewal process and allow healthy cells to take their place, turning your complexion from dull and dreary to bright and breezy.
Always a favourite amongst beauty editors, Dermalogica’s Gentle Cream Exfoliant will start to make your skin feel silky smooth in just 10 minutes. It does this through use of fruit enzymes, which stimulate skin removal and detach dead skin. Exfoliation is most effective when done once or twice a week, or try one day of intense exfoliation paired with several days of more gentle exfoliation. This will reduce signs of ageing and improve skin texture. Apply the exfoliator to your face, leave for 10 minutes, and rinse accordingly.
Masque
If your skin is feeling extra dry, for that added burst of moisture, supplement your regime with a facial masque. Masques are designed to contribute to the rehydration of your skin, remove excess sebum, unclog your pores and improve elasticity and texture.
Use the Skin Hydrating Masque about once or twice a week after cleansing to restore moisture to the skin. Our masque is oil and colour free and contains antioxidant vitamins which deliver time-released hydration for lasting effects. Apply the masque to your face, place cucumbers over your eyes for that special pampered feeling, and relax for 10 minutes before rinsing and drying.
Tone
For use after cleansing, applying a toner to your skin will remove any dead skin cells, prepare your skin for optimal moisture absorption, and leave your skin more porous, smoother looking, fresher and even younger.
With a refreshing blend of skin-repairing aloe, moisture-binding humectants and soothing lavender, balm mint and arnica, just one spritz of the Multi-active Toner will rehydrate your skin. Simply spray directly over your face, making sure your eyes are closed of course.
Moisturise
Moisturiser will improve your skin’s texture, making it more soft, pliable and elastic, and will protect the skin against the environment whilst regulating moisture loss from your skin.
Moisturise using Skin Smoothing Cream, as this will keep your skin hydrated. Containing mallow, cucumber and arnica extracts, the cream will improve your skin’s texture, relieve tightness, restore suppleness and ensure smoothness. Simply apply to your face and gain more hydrated and softer skin in no time.
Repair
Finally, work at repairing any damaged skin. The thinnest skin is found around your eyes, the skin on your eyelids measuring 0.02mm thick. This leaves it more vulnerable to the elements, especially as you age. This skin is particularly delicate and so requires a little extra care and attention to fight against crows feet, bags and the like.
Our Intensive Eye Repair cream is ideal for dry or prematurely ageing skin. Gently apply around the eye area, and help smooth away lines from around your eyes. Free from artificial odours and colours, phytonutrients and vitamins replenish the skin, increasing your skin’s elasticity and shielding the skin from further harm.
By following these seven steps, your skin will be better cleansed, exfoliated, toned, moisturised and repaired. As a result, your skin will look and feel younger, brighter, refreshed, hydrated, elastic, smoother and softer. If you find that these steps work for you, continue with the routine to improved skin with Dermalogica’s full sized products, and feel confident and satisfied with the skin you’re in.
]]>In your 30s, you may start to notice fine lines appearing, particularly around the eyes and mouth (expression lines), and skin starts to take on a dull appearance as cell growth slows down. Pregnancy hormones can also affect the skin, causing a ‘pregnancy mask’ (hyperpigmentation). Lifestyle choices such as smoking, heavy drinking, and poor diet can also accelerate the ageing process.
In your 40s, expression lines deepen, particularly around the eyes (crow's feet) and mouth. Skin starts to lose tone and becomes drier as sebum levels decrease. You might also notice the appearance of age spots (hyperpigmentation) and broken capillaries caused by sun exposure.
In your 50s and beyond, hormonal changes brought on by the menopause can cause skin flushing, dryness and a reduction in elastin. Oestrogen levels decline and skin starts to sag. This is most noticeable around the jawline and neck, and the eyes may also appear ‘hooded’.
And remember; ageing is a natural part of life. Don't be afraid to laugh and don’t sweat the small stuff. The rest, Dermalogica can take care of!
]]>UV is light radiation produced by the sun, strong enough to penetrate the earth. Both UVA and UVB rays cause damage to our skin and DNA. Resulting in premature skin aging, damage to our eyes such as cataracts, and skin cancers.
UVA
UVA is believed to account for up to 95% of the UV radiation that reaches the earth, and can penetrate clouds and glass. UVA rays are mostly responsible for tanning. A tan occurs as our body produces melanin to protect us. Darkening of the skin is damaged skin. Resulting in damage to the deeper layers of skin known as the dermis and playing a large part in skin aging, such as loss of elasticity and wrinkling (photoaging), dark spots (hyperpigmentation) and more worryingly, basal and squamous cell cancers (non-melanoma).
UVB
UVB rays are the main cause of skin burning and redness, resulting in damage to the upper layers of skin, the epidermis. And are the primary cause of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. UVB rays are shorter and do not penetrate glass sufficiently to cause damage.
Despite our best intentions, we all get caught out from time to time. If redness, sunburn or hyperpigmentation have occurred, here’s how you can care for your post-sun skin.
